Creamy gelato, handmade by Italians

Giovanni left the Calabrian coast for Perth in 1984 and opened his first scoop shop in Leederville in 1999. Twenty-seven years on, the same family still makes it by hand, in small batches, fresh every day.

The family behind every scoop

My journey began in the south of Italy, near the coast. I fondly remember my summers at the beach with a gelato in hand. After visiting Perth in 1984, I loved it so much that I decided to stay; the family joke is that I'm still on holiday. I wanted to share my favourite childhood treat with Australia, and so in 1999 I opened the first Il Gelato scoop shop in Leederville. My favourite flavour is nocciola', what's yours?

The craft

Why gelato, not ice cream

Gelato is churned slowly, so it comes out smooth and silky. We use fresh milk and far less cream, which means more flavour and less fat than regular ice cream, and it is denser, so you get more in every scoop.

Our milk comes from the fertile WA southwest, and our pastes come from an Italian family that has made them for over 70 years.

Recognition

Twenty-seven years, a wall of medals

Our Argentinian Salted Caramel was named Champion Ice Cream at the 2017 WA DIAA Product Competition. Our Choc Tops have been crowned Champion Dairy Dessert. We have taken Gold at the Sydney Royal Show and Most Innovative Product in the show at the DIAA National Awards.
